We are working to evolve a culture where:
- Children are safe
- An abuser is punished and blamed and not the child
- Parents teach children responsible sexuality – and not leave the job to their peers or the media!
We are working to evolve a culture where:
- Each gender is valued
- Relationships are based on mutual respect rather than on money or dowry.
- A child is reared with love to fulfill her potential rather than discriminated and abused.
We are working to evolve a culture where there is:
- Acknowledgement and abundance rather than comparisonand scarcity
- Enquiry rather than obedience
Our programs include:
- Life Skills, sexuality and personal safety education for school and college students
- Peer Education program in colleges because young people learn readily from their peers
- Programs for teachers parents and trainers
- Demystifying Sexuality for key adults- like parents, teachers, counsellors – it gives them an understanding of sexuality and how to discuss it with their children.
We are reaching all strata of the society.
We have conducted classes for private schools, Govt aided schools, children with disability, children at Juvenile rehabilitation centers, college students in Shillong and slum children in Gurgaon.
OUR RESULTS
Students responses
So we are happily conducting these sessions, but how have the students taken it? What has been their response? We take regular feedback from students and a study among 400 students, published in Indian Journal of Paediatrics showed that the sessions positively altered the behaviour and attitude of 57% of the students Partly and 20% of the students completely. That comes to around 77%. There is a shift in what they think of themselves, how they feel about themselves, and how they interact with with family, friends and teachers. They are more aware of personal safety and are able to assert their rights to personal space and safety.
On Track
Emboldened by such responses we thought of reaching out to many more children all over India. So DrSangeeta, Dr Sahibya and Dr Shekhar Seshadri wrote a series of workbooks for school children of 3rd to 9th grade. These workbooks are published by Macmillan and are being used by thousands of school children all over India.
The primary purpose of these workbooks was to build a child’s self esteem so that he/she is able to communicate well, maintain enriching relationships and be safe. In a study of 277 students, 77% reported increased safety awareness, 81% reported improved handling of emotions and 96% reported increased self awareness.
On track workbooks come with parents manual as we wanted to empower adults to choose parenting styles that support a child’s inner growth and development.
Beyond the classroom
Enfold also works Beyond the class room. We publish studies, attend conferences, report in media, network with other organization and advocate gender valuation and child safety.
Enfold works in hospitals and state government to set up Child Protection Units. This involves linking and training counsellors, medical practitioners, social workers, police and judiciary for the benefit of the sexually abused child. It will ensure a single point contact for the child and family and avoid harassment and multiple examinations.
Where are we now?
We have reached 35,000 students in 15 cities and towns in India. We have interacted with 1600 Parents, 1400 Teachers and hundreds of young adults
